Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is set to launch its green hydrogen plant in Panipat, Haryana, within the next two years, marking a significant step toward India’s sustainable energy goals. IOC Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney shared this development during an exclusive conversation with ANI at the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, Switzerland.
Sahney confirmed that the plant, which will have a production capacity of 10,000 tons per annum, is progressing well. “The green hydrogen plant is now active. We have received very good bids, and the tenders are currently under evaluation. We expect to award the contract in the next month, and the plant in Panipat will be commissioned within two years,” he said.
The green hydrogen plant is a crucial part of India’s green energy mission, contributing to the nation’s drive for a carbon-neutral and sustainable future.
Sahney also provided insights into IOC’s ongoing efforts in the City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector. “We are making significant progress in the CGD business, developing infrastructure, and increasing the number of connections,” Sahney explained. “We are focused on expanding our network of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations and piped natural gas (PNG) supply to households.”
IOC is working to improve accessibility to clean energy, enhancing its network to provide more CNG connections and expanding its PNG pipeline infrastructure across India.
Regarding future acquisitions, Sahney clarified that while IOC does not have any active plans for acquisitions at present, the company is focused on strengthening its existing operations and infrastructure.
Sahney also addressed the potential impact of recent US sanctions on Russia and the threats of further punitive actions by the new Trump administration. He downplayed concerns, stating, “It is not difficult to manage because the effect is limited. We are abiding by the sanctions that exist.”
He further emphasized that India has diversified energy sources, ensuring that its energy supply remains secure. “We have multiple sources to meet our energy needs, and that ensures stability,” Sahney added.
With its green hydrogen initiatives and expanding CGD network, IOC is playing a key role in supporting India’s transition to cleaner and greener energy sources.
